What to Wear
I look forward to many things during the holidays. Caroling, spiked eggnog, candles that smell like pine, sugar cookies, and of course, a good Christmas party. It has come to my attention that not everyone feels like I do because they feel stumped as to how to dress. Here are three fool-proof party looks that you can put together with things you might already own:
Black Turtleneck/White Shirt: I want you to forget the notion that white is for summer only. Black and white are a match made in heaven, and while basic, they always manage to look polished. If black turtlenecks are good enough for Diane Keaton, they’re good enough for me.
Accessorize with long gold necklaces, or keep it simple if your style is minimal.
Full Skirt/Leather Jacket: A full skirt gives you a touch of retro-glamour, which is why I like to pair it with a leather motorcycle jacket to toughen up the look. A simple cami underneath and you’re ready to sip mulled wine with your friends in style.
A Little Lace or Fur: To avoid looking like your grandmother’s doily, use lace to accentuate your best features whether you choose a blouse, skirt, or dress. And because lace is not warm, throw on your best fur (or faux fur) accessory and strut into that party the Miranda Priestly way, you fancy thing.
Bonus points: Red lipstick. Boom, instant cheer!
Bro Style: Fortunately for you, gentlemen, we don’t need a full-on tuxedo or even a suit to put you into the holiday spirit. Depending on the formality of the affair, a fresh pressed shirt over trousers or jeans should do the trick. I suggest a bow-tie to finish the look, I know it’s bold, but so are you. As an alternative, a nice wool sweater a shade lighter than your pants should do the trick.
