Join mycology professor Dr. Gary Laursen in Juneau for a weekend of collecting, identifying, and appreciating the wonderful wild and edible mushrooms of Southeast Alaska.

Dr. Laursen has studied fungi around the world for more than 40 years and has offered mushroom identification classes across Alaska. He has written several books on fungi, including, most recently, “Alaska’s Mushrooms: A Wide-Ranging Guide,” which he co-authored, and Common Interior Cryptograms: Fungi, Lichenicolous Fungi, Lichenized Fungi, Slime Molds, Mosses, and Liverworts. He is currently working on a book about mushrooms of Southeast Alaska.

Participants will collect, identify, and learn how to prepare and preserve wild mushrooms. Mushrooms will be collected in several walks around Juneau and identified. These workshops are part of a Wild Mushroom Weekend hosted by the Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition.

On Friday, September 13, Amalga Distillery will host a FREE book-signing, meet and greet with Dr. Laursen from 6-8 pm. On Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, he will lead day-long mushroom walks (fungi forays) from 9-5pm. We are currently planning to meet at Fish creek trail Saturday, and Boyscout Beach Trail Sunday. Weather and fungi abundance depending, we may change locations and will notify you if we do so.

On Saturday, September 14th, Dr. Laursen will also offer an evening lecture at the UAF Cooperative Extension, Juneau District office, from 6:30-8pm.

Spaces for the workshops and lecture are limited and tickets are required. Sign up early to save your spot! Purchase tickets at the JAHC, https://jahc.org/box-office

Note:
Mushroom walks will take place outdoors all day. Participants on the walks are advised to dress for the weather, be prepared to walk on an easy local trail, and bring their own picnic lunch. Dogs are not permitted on the walks.

Minimum age is 8 years old. Children ages 8-14 are welcome, and must be accompanied by a parent.
