Country Gravy with Alaska Barley

Country Gravy with Alaska Barley

Alaska Flour Company barley is grown in Delta Junction and will darken the gravy, adding depth of flavor.
Course Breakfast, Main Course
Servings 6 -8, depending on how drenched you like your biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2/3 cup barley flour
  • 1–2 cups milk
  • ½ capful liquid smoke (optional)
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Brown the sausage and reserve the drippings. Remove sausage and set aside. Turn down to medium heat and add butter. Once butter melts, add flour and stir until darkened to a roux. Slowly add milk and whisk. Decrease milk for a thicker gravy; increase for thinner. Whisk continually on medium heat for five minutes, or until gravy thickens. Add pepper and liquid smoke. Stir sausage back in.
