Watermelon Berry Mezcal Cooler
Jessica VallettaSlightly smoky, slightly sweet, and freshly foraged, this curiously cucumber-tinged cocktail offers requisite summer refreshment in a glass.
Course Drinks
Servings 1 highball cocktail and is easily doubled for 2
Ingredients
- 1 ounce (about 6) fresh watermelon berries
- 1 teaspoon agave nectar or honey
- 1½ ounces mezcal
- ¾ ounce cranberry juice
- 4 ounces club soda or seltzer
- Slice of watermelon, cucumber, or lime, for garnish (optional)
- Fresh mint, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Add the spoonful of watermelon berries and liquid sweetener to your 8- to 12-ounce highball glass.
- Give a good, quick mash with the back of a wooden spoon or cocktail masher to release the juices in the berries a bit. Add ice, the mezcal, and the cranberry juice, top with what club soda can fit in your glass and stir drink with a straw.
Notes
Note: similar to other round berries, watermelon berries are easily frozen on a cookie sheet, and then stored in a well-labeled, sealed bag for future consumption. Consider popping the frozen gems into future cocktails or mocktails, and/or using for middle-of-winter juice making.
