AN HEIRLOOM BOWL DESERVES HEIRLOOM SOURDOUGH

Bake some bread and build memories with your handmade Great Alaskan Bowl Company wooden bowl, perfect for mixing and kneading your family’s sourdough. New to sourdough? We are delighted to carry starter from the folks at Frontiersman Sourdough in Anchorage. They’ve shared some tips to help get you baking:

Activate your starter at least 24 hours before use. One full package creates approximately 24 oz of starter ready to use and share.

Step 1: Empty entire contents into a large mixing bowl. Add 2 oz of lukewarm water to the starter and let soak for 1 hour, stirring vigorously on occasion until dissolved. Thoroughly mix in 2 oz unbleached, all-purpose flour and 2 oz water, cover loosely, and let rest approximately 12 hours or until it is actively bubbling.

Step 2: Thoroughly mix in 8 oz unbleached, all-purpose flour and 8 oz water, cover loosely, and let rest approximately 12 hours or until it is actively bubbling. Your starter is now active and ready to use.

Frontiersman Sourdough starter is alive and needs to be maintained over time. Feeding flour and water to your starter provides the nutrients it requires to stay strong. Always retain at least 4 oz of healthy starter in your storage container to propagate more for future recipes. Store starter at room temperature if you’re using it daily, otherwise, store it in the fridge.
