One of the greatest barriers to getting started in agriculture can be funding. For new producers, a lack of startup funds can make it difficult to grow an operation and execute a vision for the business. The AgWest New Producer Grant celebrates the ingenuity and passion of aspiring new producers by helping them start or grow an operation, access educational support, and build connections with other producers.

“At AgWest Farm Credit, we are inspired by the innovation and dedication of the newest entrants into agriculture,” said Jesika Harper, VP of the AgWest AgVision Program. “Participants in the inaugural New Producer Grant Program demonstrated their commitment to their crafts and to creating vital operations that will positively benefit our communities and respective industries.”

Now in its second year, the program is designed for full or part-time agricultural professionals with two years or less of operational experience or those who plan to start their operation within two years of the grant application date. The application process is built to help aspiring agricultural producers learn how to manage a business successfully and aims to teach all applicants the importance of sound financial management. Applicants submit a business plan, cash flow budget, and essay as part of the grant application process.

In 2023, AgWest Farm Credit awarded 30 motivated individuals throughout the West with grants to help them pursue their agricultural dreams. Three Alaska producers were among the 2023 recipients: Brandi Jo Nyberg, of Sauntering Roots Farm in Palmer; Emma Thissen with Karluk Fisheries in Homer; and Hailey Thompson-Ivanoff of Kelp Island AK, LLC, in Kodiak.

The application window for the 2024 New Producer Grant runs from March 1 through May 31, 2024. Access more information and application materials, or contact us by email at AgVision@AgWestFC.com.
