Somer Hahm (left) and Wendy Anderson (right) came together with Grace Wilson of Our 2 Cents, a Fairbanks non-profit helping local organizations acquire adequate funding for projects that support the local community, to make the installation and ceremony happen. Anderson, who has been instrumental to the community garden space’s survival, upkeep, and improvement since 1991, says “We’ve been intent on making it a positive space that’s safe and beautiful, and we knew right away that Somer’s art would be perfect to help achieve this.”
“Juncos” is one of two outdoor art installations, or “barn quilts,” by Somer Hahm installed in the Fairbanks Community Garden this past July. The inspiration for this piece, Hahm says, came from conversations with garden members about the things they most loved about their Fairbanks plots. “One person talked passionately about the juncos that nest and fly around. Their presence made her happy, and it stuck out in my mind as a great departure point for the piece.”
