Our Food, Our People, Our Future
Imagine a healthy, nourished, food-secure Alaska. The Alaska Food Policy Council (AFPC) works through action, information, and advocacy to improve Alaska’s food system.
You may know that 95% of Alaska’s food comes in from out of state—maybe you’ve even experienced supply chain interruptions and high prices that go hand-in-hand with Alaska’s reliance on imported food. Did you know Alaska also exports two billion dollars per year in food resources? Did you know that one in five children in Alaska experience hunger?
The AFPC advocates for the health of all Alaskans by working towards food access —especially to local food—and by advocating for legislation designed to strengthen Alaska’s food systems. For example, if you followed the fight last year to keep Alaska dairies certified and the Division of Agriculture doors open, you may not have realized that AFPC volunteers and members worked hard behind the scenes to keep our state agencies funded so they could continue to do this important work.
Every year and a half, the AFPC gathers farmers, food entrepreneurs, students, and food policy academics together with local food enthusiasts for a Food Festival and Conference. It’s a do-not-miss event in the Alaska food world. This year’s festival and conference is virtual. “We hope that more people will participate without the barriers of cost, time, and travel,” says AFPC board secretary Lorinda Lhotka. Learn more about how you can participate, in the sidebar to the right.
Save the date for this fall’s Alaska Food Policy Council Festival & Conference
It’s virtual! Join online November 6-7, 2020
Local, regional, and national speakers will present on a variety of food security, production, business, and community issues, with a special emphasis on rural and Indigenous food systems, and food entrepreneurship. The conference will also offer chef and food preparation demonstrations, DIY workshops, and virtual farm and processing facility tours.
Participate: nominate a 2020 Alaska Food Hero or submit a conference topic. We are actively soliciting abstracts for papers, panels, and posters on our website. We seek submissions to represent the breadth and depth of Alaska’s diverse communities.
