Join the Catch 49 Community
Food unifies us. We all need to eat. From harvest to consumption, care invested in food connects us with each other and the planet that supports all life.
How do you connect to your seafood? Catch 49, Southcentral Alaska’s community-supported fishery, links local fishermen, seafood lovers, chefs, farmers market patrons, and grassroots organizers around a shared love of the ocean, its bounty, and the systems that Alaska’s pristine fisheries depend on and will need for generations to come.
Catch 49 seafood has a story. This fishermen-led organization is run by the Alaska Marine Conservation Council. AMCC’s work shows that sustainable food systems start with harvest methods that respect and support ecosystems and local communities. Ten years ago, AMCC saw a need to ensure that rockfish and cod weren’t caught solely by big trawlers. They advocated for local small boat fishermen to have an opportunity to enter the Kodiak groundfish fishery and earn a living wage through careful catch-handling. Catch 49’s support of that fleet continues today, ensuring that these fishermen have a local market (that’s you!) for their high-quality catch.
Catch 49 has partnered with Natalie Janicka—formerly executive chef at Snow City Café and the Bear Tooth Theatrepub & Grill. She’s now with Haute Quarter Grill, and she spearheads her own venture, Twisted Spruce Kitchen. Chef Janicka creates custom recipes available only through Catch 49, like this delicious rockfish recipe featuring jig-caught rockfish (or Alaska halibut or cod) with seasonal Alaska tomatoes and onions. Enjoy.
