During summer, I'm outside all the time — whether it's fishing, camping, or gardening, my hands usually take a beating. This simple scrub gets my dry, dirty hands clean and moisturized in no time and I usually have all the ingredients around the house, which means no special trips to the store.

A scrub that's cheaper to make than the one in the cosmetic aisle and it's made from real ingredients? Yes, please!

Plus, this is a great gift for showers, weddings, visiting guests from the Lower 48, and more. Here’s how to make it:

What You’ll Need

Coconut oil, the kind in a jar
Salt, Epsom salt or sea salt (granulated sugar will work, too!)
Lavender buds, fresh or dried, roughly ground or chopped
Fresh rosemary, several sprigs, roughly chopped into smaller bits
Pint-sized jar, new or repurposed
Lavender essential oil or vitamin E oil, 10-20 drops (optional, though the lavender oil is great for aromatherapy)

Making The Scrub

Step 1 - Melt The Coconut Oil

Place 1 cup coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl. In a microwave, oven or warm water bath, melt the coconut oil until it's translucent. (This will go really quickly in the microwave, so plan on 10-15 second intervals, stirring each time until oil is ready.)

Step 2 - Mix In The Salt

Add 1/2 cup salt to your melted coconut oil and mix well. You can add more or less coconut oil and salt until you get to the consistency you prefer.

Step 3 - Add The Herbs

Mix in your cut rosemary and your lavender buds. (These might float to the top if your coconut oil is still pretty wet, but don't worry — you can mix it all up once it solidifies.) If using, add the drops of essetial oil during this step.

Step 4 - Store It

Transfer your scrub into your pint-sized jar for storage.

To Use:

Scoop about a tablespoon of the scrub into your palm and work it over both hands in a circular motion, focusing on particularly rough spots. Rinse and enjoy!
