We’re thrilled to announce that Edible Alaska took home five awards at the 2018 annual Alaska Press Club conference held in Anchorage over the weekend.

Caroline Zhang’s mouthwatering winter issue cover photo of a stack of sourdough hot cakes won first place in the Magazine Cover category. Judge Joan Carten-Hansen said, “You want to eat that!” Bethany Goodrich took home third in that same category. The judges loved her summer image of wild Alaska salmon.

Writer Miranda Weiss and photographer Ash Adams received a second place award in the Best Food Reporting category for their story “Paula, Ann, and the Octopus” from our Spring 2017 issue. Judge Gretchen McKay commented, “a lovely sense of time and place in this story. The writer quickly set the scene, and painted an engaging picture of the characters and their world. Actually made me want to eat octopus -- no small feat! The recipe was a nice touch.”

Also in that category, Shannon Kuhn and Will Koeppen’s story “Feeding Alaska” about the VanderWeele family was awarded third place.

Bethany Goodrich also won an award for her photo essay “Spring Fever” that highlighted subsistence harvests in Southeast Alaska. She took home second place in the Best Picture Story category for her work.

Congratulations to all our contributors. We’re proud to be included in such a diverse and talented group of award winners. The entire list can be found here.
