Julia O’Malley, a third-generation Alaskan, is an independent journalist who lives in Anchorage. She has written about Alaska food and culture for The New York Times, The Washington Post, High Country News, and The Guardian among other publications. She received a James Beard Award in 2018 for a story about a young whale hunter who was cyber-bullied by environmentalists in the village of Gambell. Her first book, a collaboration with Anchorage Museum about Alaska's food culture and history, The Whale and the Cupcake: Stories of Subsistence, Longing, and Community in Alaska, is out this winter.
