Pair adventure and cuisine in coastal Alaska

With mountains right and left, miles of trails, and Kenai Fjords National Park out back, Seward fills souls with a bounty of adventure and, luckily, a thriving food and dining scene to match. Explore Seward’s day-long waterfront, fishing, and downtown itineraries for delicious and adventurous options on how to spend your time in Seward.

Waterfront Paddle

Wake up to the sounds of the ocean at Angels Rest on Resurrection Bay, waterfront lodging on Lowell Point. The family-run cabins and suites are perfectly situated for morning wildlife viewing and beach walks. The curated coziness immersed in nature will leave you refreshed and ready for a day of fun and food.

Take a quick trip into town and stop at Resurrect Art Coffee House for a morning pick-me-up. Housed in a historic church building, the downtown staple is a gathering place for artists and coffee lovers. Take in the smell of freshly baked goods before choosing a treat to pair with your bespoke coffee, all while perusing the handmade goods and art by local artisans.

From there, head to Sunny Cove Kayaking for your Resurrection Bay kayak and craft brew tour presented in partnership with the Seward Brewing Company! You’ll start with a kayaking trip to Tonsina Point, paddling by glacial vistas and spotting wildlife like sea otters, porpoises, sea birds, salmon, and bald eagles, before landing on the beach and meandering through moss-laden forests.

After a paddling-packed day on the water, head to Seward Brewing Company where your kayak guide becomes your brew guide! You’ll enjoy light appetizers and sample a flight of locally crafted beers, created in-house by the adventurous brewery team. Stick around for dinner at the Brewing Company to enjoy the full flavor of their inventive pub cuisine and craft brews.

Fish and Fjord

Have your fish and eat it too, all while meandering the rocky coastline on a private Fish & Fjord charter with Alaska Coastal Explorer. You’ll meet in the morning at the Seward Boat Harbor for the trip of a lifetime. The full-day charter spends half the time fishing for whatever is biting, and the other half scoping out some of the most incredible sights Resurrection Bay offers. There’s plenty to see in the waters near Seward, including humpback and orca whales. Take a break from sightseeing and try your hand at catching lunch for a true ocean-to-table experience— halibut tacos, anyone?

Once back on land, take a quick detour to the Mermaid Grotto Cafe and Boutique for dinner. Located right in the harbor, the eatery provides a deliciously eclectic dining experience with an Asian fusion and Hawaiian inspired menu. Be sure to try the musubi, a small dish of teriyaki Spam and rice, wrapped in nori. And don’t forget to head upstairs for a drink and to say hello to Kraken, the Grotto’s mythical “pet.”

Downtown Explorer

Start your day by waking up in the past at Sauerdough Lodging, housed in one of Seward’s oldest buildings. Sauerdough offers five apartments to choose from, each with its own hints of history and nods to a bygone era. And on your way out to start your adventure, pop into The Sea Bean Cafe for a cup of coffee and morning snack.

After breakfast, walk to the Alaska SeaLife Center and peek through the “Windows to the Sea!” Get an up close view of all of Seward’s native creatures, including octopuses, sea otters, and puffins!

Spend the day exploring Seward’s historic downtown, stopping into the shops and galleries before heading to The Highliner Restaurant for lunch, dinner, or both. The welcoming, wood-hued decor sets the scene for a delicious and low-key meal. Enjoy classic fish and chips, a plate of Alaska’s famed king crab legs, or a juicy burger. Whatever your entrée, be sure to save room for a root beer float, a sweet way to end your day in this vibrant port city.
